2. The New Skill Gem System

In PoE 1, skills were socketed into gear. In PoE 2, active skill gems now have their own sockets, allowing support gems to be slotted directly into the skill gem. This removes the dependency on socketed gear and POE currency makes build-crafting much more intuitive.



For example, if you’re using a Fireball skill gem, you can now directly slot Faster Casting, Elemental Focus, and Increased AoE into that same gem—no need to worry about whether your chest piece has the right colored sockets.



This system is a massive quality-of-life improvement, and it allows for more freedom in experimenting with different builds.



3. Choosing a Class and Ascendancy

PoE 2 introduces 12 new ascendancy classes—two for each of the original six base classes. These new ascendancies offer fresh playstyles and identity. For instance:



Ranger > Beastmaster: Commands animal companions and POE 2 Currency synergizes with nature-based abilities.



Templar > Crusader: A tanky, hybrid melee-caster who smites enemies with divine power.



Witch > Arcanist: A master of time-bending spells and DoT mechanics.



Choosing the right class depends on your preferred gameplay. If you like summoning minions, start with Witch. Prefer hitting things hard? Duelist or Marauder might be for you. Want to cast flashy spells and teleport around? Shadow or Witch is your go-to.
